Build up to higher-order transactions

Principle 01

Helping users learn how to use a product is often pushed to the back burner. It’s not a key metric for product teams, and few users will invest time to read a manual. But there are ways to offer just enough learning to unlock greater user engagement: break up tasks into smaller steps, reward users for completing tasks, and nudge them to explore the product.

Principle 02

Give users small wins as they progress

Learning a digital product can be a tough journey for last mile users. Used carefully, incentives can help users pull through tough spots and stretch to reach milestones. Intrinsic incentives that are small and non-monetary can be effective in motivating users and building loyalty. These include progress trackers, leaderboards, and status signs like badges and virtual certificates.

Principle 03

Don’t forget to play

Designing for play is a useful tool in design. It can shift a financial experience from one fraught with anxiety and dry jargon to one that encourages exploration, invites users to level up, and even de-risks failure. Experiment with play-based engagement models in your product to delight your users
